Mustafa Suleyman is a British entrepreneur and AI researcher who co-founded DeepMind in 2010 alongside Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg, and who now leads Microsoft's consumer AI efforts as CEO of Microsoft AI. Before DeepMind, Suleyman worked in policy and mediation roles, including at the United Nations, an unusual background among AI lab founders that he has said shaped his early focus on the applied and ethical dimensions of the technology.
DeepMind and Google
At DeepMind, Suleyman led applied AI work, including health-related projects such as DeepMind Health, which partnered with the UK's National Health Service, and he helped establish some of the company's earliest internal AI ethics and safety review structures. The DeepMind Health program later drew scrutiny after reports that some of its NHS data-sharing agreements had not fully complied with UK data protection law, an episode Suleyman has since referenced when discussing the importance of responsible data governance in AI systems. He left DeepMind for Google in 2019, taking on a role at Google focused on applied AI product work as the company absorbed parts of DeepMind's applied research.
Inflection AI
In 2022, Suleyman co-founded Inflection AI with LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and researcher Karén Simonyan, raising over a billion dollars to build Pi, a personal Chatbot positioned as emotionally supportive and conversational rather than purely task-oriented, competing with ChatGPT and other assistants. In March 2024, Microsoft struck a deal to hire Suleyman, Simonyan, and most of Inflection's research staff and to license its technology, a structure widely read as a way to acquire the team and models without a formal acquisition of the company, a pattern echoed elsewhere in the industry, including Scale AI's later deal with Meta.
Microsoft AI
Suleyman became CEO of the newly formed Microsoft AI division, reporting to Satya Nadella and overseeing Microsoft's Copilot consumer products and its own in-house model efforts, alongside Microsoft's continued deep partnership with OpenAI. He has written and spoken publicly about the need for AI containment and governance, including in his 2023 book "The Coming Wave," arguing that the proliferation of powerful, cheaply reproducible AI and biotechnology poses a novel challenge to state-level control that existing regulatory frameworks are not equipped to handle.
