Demis Hassabis is a British computer scientist, neuroscientist, and former video game designer who co-founded DeepMind in 2010 and now serves as its chief executive following its 2023 merger with Google Brain. A chess prodigy in childhood, he later worked as a game designer and programmer, notably on the game Theme Park at Bullfrog Productions, before co-founding the London studio Elixir Studios and later completing a PhD in cognitive neuroscience at University College London, research he has said directly informed his approach to building general-purpose AI.
Founding DeepMind
Hassabis co-founded DeepMind in London in 2010 with Mustafa Suleyman and Shane Legg, with an explicit long-term mission of "solving intelligence, and then using that to solve everything else." Google acquired the company in 2014 for a reported price around 500 million dollars, and DeepMind operated with substantial research autonomy inside Google and then Alphabet for nearly a decade before merging with Google's other AI research group, Google Brain, in 2023 to form Google DeepMind under Hassabis's leadership, reporting to Sundar Pichai.
AlphaGo, AlphaFold, and the Nobel Prize
Under Hassabis, DeepMind produced a series of high-profile systems, including AlphaGo, which defeated world Go champion Lee Sedol in the 2016 match led by researcher David Silver, and AlphaFold, which achieved a long-standing grand challenge in biology by predicting protein three-dimensional structures from amino acid sequences with high accuracy. For the AlphaFold work, Hassabis and DeepMind colleague John Jumper shared half of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, alongside David Baker, one of the results highlighted in the broader 2024 Nobel Prizes for AI that also recognized Geoffrey Hinton and John Hopfield in physics. Hassabis was knighted by the United Kingdom in 2024 for services to artificial intelligence.
Public role and AGI views
Hassabis has become one of the most prominent public voices among frontier lab leaders on both the promise and the risks of advanced AI, arguing that Artificial general intelligence could arrive within roughly a decade while also calling for internationally coordinated AI governance and safety research, positioning him between the more accelerationist and more safety-focused camps within the industry, and Google DeepMind's Gemini model family has become the company's central competitive answer to OpenAI and other rivals during his tenure.
