Mark Zuckerberg is an American technology executive, co-founder and chief executive of Meta (formerly Facebook), who has directed billions of dollars of the company's investment toward AI research and infrastructure since the early 2020s.
Zuckerberg was born on May 14, 1984, in White Plains, New York, and co-founded Facebook in 2004 while a student at Harvard University. Meta's AI research arm, Facebook AI Research (FAIR), founded in 2013 with Yann LeCun as chief AI scientist, became one of the earliest corporate labs to publish openly in deep learning, contributing to Zuckerberg's later positioning of Meta as the industry's leading advocate for open-weights AI models.
Llama and the open-weights bet
Starting in 2023, Meta released a series of large language models under the Llama name, making their weights available for download and, for smaller versions, commercial use, a contrast to the closed, API-only approach taken by OpenAI and Anthropic. Zuckerberg argued publicly that open models would let more developers, companies, and countries build on AI without depending on a small number of closed providers, and framed the strategy as good for Meta's own product ecosystem as well as for the broader field. The approach also drew criticism from some AI safety researchers, who argued that releasing powerful model weights openly made downstream misuse harder to prevent.
Superintelligence push
In 2025, Zuckerberg restructured Meta's AI efforts into Meta Superintelligence Labs and pursued an aggressive, highly publicized hiring campaign, offering enormous compensation packages to recruit senior researchers from rival labs including OpenAI and Google DeepMind. The talent raid was widely covered as a sign of how central Zuckerberg considered advanced AI and, ultimately, superintelligence to Meta's long-term strategy, alongside continued investment in massive data center buildouts to train future frontier models.
Broader positioning
Zuckerberg has framed Meta's AI ambitions as connected to its existing products, integrating chatbot assistants across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and has described a long-term vision of personal AI companions running on smart glasses and other Meta hardware, positioning the company as a full-stack AI player spanning models, consumer apps, and devices rather than a pure research lab.
