Kai-Fu Lee is a Taiwanese-American computer scientist, technology executive, and venture capitalist known for his long career bridging American and Chinese AI development, and for his 2018 book "AI Superpowers," which argued that China's data advantages and entrepreneurial intensity would make it a genuine rival to the United States in applied AI.
Lee was born on December 3, 1961, in Taipei, Taiwan, and earned a Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University, where his doctoral research on speech recognition produced Sphinx, one of the first speaker-independent, large-vocabulary continuous speech recognition systems. He went on to hold senior research and executive roles at Apple, Silicon Graphics, and Microsoft, where he founded Microsoft Research Asia in Beijing in 1998, before joining Google in 2005 to lead the launch and growth of Google China.
Sinovation Ventures
In 2009, Lee left Google to found Sinovation Ventures (originally Innovation Works), a venture capital and startup incubation firm focused on Chinese technology companies, through which he backed numerous AI and internet startups over the following decade and became one of the most prominent commentators on China's technology ecosystem for Western audiences.

Lee's book "AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley, and the New World Order" argued that the deep learning era rewarded abundant data and fast execution over pure research novelty, favoring China's large user base and government support alongside America's continued research leadership. In 2023, following the launch of ChatGPT, Lee founded 01.AI, a Chinese AI lab that released the Yi family of large language models, positioning the company among a wave of well-funded Chinese startups pursuing foundation models alongside firms like DeepSeek.
