Satya Nadella is an Indian-American business executive who has served as chief executive officer of Microsoft since 2014, and who oversaw the company's transformation into one of the largest investors in and beneficiaries of the generative AI boom.
Nadella was born on August 19, 1967, in Hyderabad, India, and joined Microsoft in 1992 after graduate studies in the United States, rising through roles in the company's server and cloud businesses before becoming CEO. Under his leadership Microsoft shifted its strategic center of gravity toward cloud computing through Azure, a shift that later positioned the company well to supply the computing infrastructure behind the AI boom.
The OpenAI partnership
Nadella championed Microsoft's investment in OpenAI, starting with $1 billion in 2019 and expanding to a reported $10 billion or more by 2023, structured as a mix of cash and Azure computing credits rather than a simple equity stake. The partnership gave Microsoft privileged access to OpenAI's models, including GPT-4, and made Azure the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI's training and inference workloads for years. During the 2023 OpenAI board crisis, Nadella played a visible role, publicly backing Sam Altman and offering to hire him and his colleagues at Microsoft if the situation were not resolved, a move widely seen as pressuring OpenAI's board toward reinstating Altman.
Copilot everywhere
Following the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, Nadella moved quickly to integrate OpenAI's models across Microsoft's product line under the Copilot brand, including GitHub Copilot for developers, Copilot in Microsoft 365 for office productivity software, and a chatbot built into the Bing search engine and Windows. This strategy aimed to turn generative AI, and specifically AI coding assistants and writing tools, into a broad new revenue line embedded in software many businesses already used, rather than a standalone product competing directly with ChatGPT.
Reception
Nadella's AI strategy is widely credited with reviving investor enthusiasm for Microsoft and with accelerating enterprise adoption of generative AI tools, though critics have questioned how much revenue Copilot features have actually generated relative to Microsoft's AI infrastructure spending, and Microsoft has since diversified its model relationships beyond OpenAI alone.
