He pulled the rusted lock from the door at noon,
a key he did not trust from the office drawer of the landlord.
The air inside was stale, a smell of damp cloth and oil.
He counted boxes, stacked them one by one.
He thought of the standing order he would cancel,
the bank had charged him monthly, and he let it go so.
The light came in a narrow strip from a high window, so
he worked in that dimness, squinting at the labels on each crate.
A bicycle leaned against a cabinet, its tire flat, one
wheel bent. He did not touch it. He moved a stool
to reach a shelf, and from that shelf he pulled a bag
of rags, and set it down. He would not sort them now.
He dragged a heavy box of books across the floor, from
the far corner to the center, and the dust rose so
thick he coughed. He found a hammer, a wrench, a jar
of nails, a roll of tape, a bucket, and a bolt.
He set them on a trolley. He did not know what he would
keep. He checked his watch. The afternoon was young, at
three o'clock he stopped to sit on an overturned bin. At
his feet lay a blanket folded tight, a rope coiled from
some previous move. He picked up a glove, then put it down. He would
not wear it. The paint on the wall was chipped, and so
was the plaster near the socket. He pulled a cable from
a cabinet, let it drop, and stepped away from one
stack of newspapers tied with string. He left that one
alone. He found a battery, a drill, a washer, at
the back of a shelf, behind a bottle of old oil. From
a hook hung a cloth, and beside it a key. He would
not test the lock again. He swept a corner with a broom, so
the dust moved in a cloud, and he thought of the rent he would
not pay next year. He opened a cardboard box and would
have closed it, but he saw a single hinge, and one
more hinge, and a bag of screws. He set the box aside so
he could lift a heavier one. He found a ladder, at
last, and leaned it against the wall. He climbed one
step, then another, to reach a shelf high up, from
which he pulled a crate of jars. He came down from
that ladder, and the effort made him breathe hard. He would
not climb again. He wiped his face with a rag, one
of the clean ones, and he checked the time. He had one
hour left. He moved a chair, a stool, a small table at
the center of the floor, and he arranged them so
the space looked less like a storage room. He did so
without thinking, and the order felt wrong, so he moved them back from
where they had been. He picked up a tire and rolled it to one
corner. He found a lock without a key, and he would
have thrown it out, but he put it on the shelf instead, at
the edge, beside a box of bolts. He stood and looked at
the room, the boxes, the bags, the tools. He had at
least an hour of work left, and he knew he would
finish before dark. He took a bottle of water from
his coat, drank, and set it down. He picked up one
more crate, carried it to the trolley, and he did so
without hurry. He had paid for this space, and he would
clear it out. He found a wrench inside a drawer, one
he had forgotten, and he put it in the bin. He would
not keep it. He closed the door, locked it, and walked away from
the garage, the afternoon done, the work finished, so
he left the key with the landlord, and that was that. At
the end of the day, he had nothing to show for it, of
the hours spent, the dust, the weight of each box. He would
not think of it again. He drove home, and the road was clear, so
he made good time, and the evening came on, and he was done with it, of.
