A fun prompt for these types of visuals. I mainly want it to be for satire but can work for a variety of topics.
UNKNOWNS δ = the target's deviation vector from the population mean face ; α = amplification factor ; P = the power differential in the depicted relation ; the single claim ; the reading order
LAWS
caricature amplifies deviation, not features The operation is: measure the face against the population mean, then multiply the difference. Amplifying a feature that is already average destroys likeness instead of building it. Recognition INCREASES with α up to a threshold and then collapses - a good caricature is identified faster than the photograph it came from. α must be picked and held.
one deviation carries the load Most working caricatures ride a single dominant deviation - the jaw, the hairline, the distance from brow to eye - and let everything else follow from it. The rest of the face deforms consistently along that axis. Selective exaggeration of one feature on an otherwise photo-accurate head is the uncanny tell.
satire's mechanism is the power differential The form works by aiming at whoever holds power in the relation depicted, and P must be encoded by STAGING - relative scale, height, who acts and who is acted upon, who occupies the frame's strong position. If P is inverted the drawing still functions as an image but stops functioning as satire.
one claim per cartoon A political cartoon makes ONE argument. Every additional symbol either serves it or dilutes it. Three points is zero points.
labels are a confession Labelling a genuinely unguessable abstraction is legitimate. Labelling every object means the drawing failed to carry the idea. Test: if the elephant needs "THE ECONOMY" written on it, the elephant was the wrong animal.
the metaphor must resolve mechanically The conceit has to work as a physical situation as well as an argument. A ship of state must be a functioning ship, with a hull that floats and a helm connected to a rudder. If the metaphor breaks when taken literally, the joke breaks with it.
the caption is the second beat Image lands, caption turns. If the caption describes the image, one of them is redundant and the drawing is doing no work.
exaggeration bottoms out at the skeleton The figure still stands. There is still a spine bearing the pose and a foot under the centre of mass. Anatomy is deformed, not abandoned.
CONSERVATION Every element in frame is load-bearing for the single claim. Ink weight is spent on the claim and nowhere else.
OVERDETERMINATION likeness recovered 3× ⇒ 2 redundant equalities L̂_silhouette (identifiable as pure black at thumbnail size) · L̂_proportion (the deviation ratios) · L̂_gesture (the habitual posture and characteristic expression). All three name the same person, and the silhouette test is the strict one.
HONEST One target, one claim, one α, one direction of power, one metaphor that survives being taken literally.
FORBIDDEN A photo-accurate face with one cartoonishly enlarged feature ; amplification of an average feature ; every object labelled ; a metaphor that collapses under literal reading ; a caption that restates the image ; three arguments in one panel ; staging that puts the powerful party in the victim position while presenting as satire ; a figure whose exaggerated body has no weight-bearing solution ; a caricature unrecognisable in silhouette.
