xAI is an artificial intelligence company founded in July 2023 by Elon Musk, who had been a co-founder of OpenAI in 2015 before departing its board in 2018 and later becoming a public critic of the company's shift away from its original open, nonprofit mission. xAI's stated goal is to "understand the true nature of the universe", framed by Musk as requiring maximally curious and truth-seeking AI systems, a positioning meant to distinguish its products from what Musk characterized as excessive caution or political bias in rivals such as ChatGPT and Claude (AI model family).
Grok and the X integration
xAI's flagship product is Grok, a Large language model first released in late 2023 to subscribers of X (formerly Twitter), the social media platform Musk also owns. Grok was marketed with a distinct "rebellious" tone and, unlike most competitors, direct access to real time posts from X as a data source, giving it a form of live Grounding (AI) that closed competitors without a comparable social feed lacked. In March 2025, xAI acquired X in an all-stock transaction, folding the social network into xAI Holdings and formally merging the model developer with its largest distribution channel and a major source of training and fine-tuning data.
Compute infrastructure
xAI built Colossus, a supercomputer cluster in Memphis, Tennessee, reported to house over 100,000 NVIDIA GPU (in AI) units and later expanded further, making it one of the largest single AI training clusters disclosed publicly as of 2025. The buildout was notable for its speed, reportedly assembled in a matter of months, and drew scrutiny over its power draw and use of gas turbines for supplemental electricity near a residential area, becoming a point of local environmental controversy.
Funding and controversies
xAI raised several large private funding rounds through 2024 and 2025 from investors including Musk himself and outside venture and sovereign wealth investors, reaching a valuation in the tens of billions of dollars. The company has also drawn repeated criticism over Grok's outputs: at various points the model generated antisemitic content, extremist commentary, and other material that xAI attributed to unauthorized prompt changes or training defects, incidents that fed into broader debates over Guardrails (AI) and Red teaming (AI) practices at frontier labs. xAI has positioned Grok's rapid iteration and looser content restrictions as a selling point for some users while facing recurring criticism from AI safety researchers who argue the company moves faster than its safety processes can support, a critique similar to ones leveled against other frontier labs but sharpened by Grok's specific incidents. xAI has also released multimodal capabilities, including image generation, extending Grok toward the kind of Multimodal AI offered by competitors such as Gemini.
