Stanford Research is the research enterprise of Stanford University, a private research university in Stanford, California. History and Development
Stanford University was founded in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford as a tribute to their only child, Leland Stanford Jr., and admitted its first students in 1891. After Leland Stanford died in 1893, the university faced financial challenges, but Jane Stanford insisted it remain in operation. The campus suffered major damage from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, though most was repaired. Following World War II, provost Frederick Terman inspired an entrepreneurial culture that helped establish Silicon Valley. In 1951, Stanford Research Park was created in Palo Alto as the world's first university research park.
