Stability AI is a company headquartered in London, founded in 2019 by Emad Mostaque, that rose to prominence in August 2022 when it funded and coordinated the public release of Stable Diffusion, an open-weights Text-to-image generation model built on Latent space diffusion research from a university lab. Unlike closed contemporaries such as DALL-E and Midjourney, Stable Diffusion's weights could be downloaded and run locally, which triggered a rapid explosion of community tools, fine-tunes, and derivative products across the Diffusion model ecosystem.
Origins and the Stable Diffusion release
Stability AI did not itself invent the underlying latent diffusion technique, which came from researchers including Robin Rombach at LMU Munich's CompVis group; instead the company financed the compute for training a production scale version and, working with partners including Runway, pushed for an open release rather than an API-gated one. The decision made Stability AI, for a period, the most visible symbol of the open source wing of generative AI, in contrast to the closed strategies of OpenAI and later Midjourney. The company built its training pipeline substantially on datasets curated by LAION, the German nonprofit that scraped billions of image-text pairs from the web.
Growth, funding, and turmoil
Stability AI raised funding at a valuation reported around one billion dollars in 2022 as investor enthusiasm for generative AI accelerated, and it expanded into text, audio, video, and 3D generation research alongside its image work, hiring researchers such as Robin Rombach directly. However, the company struggled to convert its research prominence into a sustainable business, and it burned through cash faster than it generated revenue from enterprise licensing and cloud hosting. Emad Mostaque resigned as chief executive in March 2024 amid reports of financial strain, unpaid compute bills, and internal disagreement over strategy. Several senior researchers, including the original Stable Diffusion team, departed around the same period to found Black Forest Labs, a rival that released the FLUX image model in 2024.
Later releases and reception
Stability AI continued to release successive Stable Diffusion versions, including SDXL and Stable Diffusion 3, alongside experiments in audio and video generation, and brought in new leadership and investors, including music industry figures, to stabilize its finances. Its trajectory has become a frequently cited case study in discussions of the open source generative AI business model: the same openness that made Stable Diffusion culturally influential and central to tools like ControlNet also made it difficult for the company to capture value directly from its own model's popularity, a tension distinct from the closed API businesses of Anthropic and OpenAI.
