Sebastian Thrun (born May 14, 1967, in Solingen, West Germany) is a computer scientist recognized as one of the founding figures of practical autonomous vehicle research and a prominent contributor to online AI education. He earned a PhD from the University of Bonn before moving to the United States, where he held faculty positions at Carnegie Mellon University and later Stanford University.
DARPA Grand Challenge
Thrun led Stanford's racing team in the DARPA Grand Challenge, a U.S. government-sponsored competition for autonomous vehicles navigating desert terrain without human intervention. After a 2004 event in which no team finished the course, Thrun's team entered a modified Volkswagen Touareg in the October 2005 challenge and won, completing the 132-mile course in under seven hours. The win was widely covered as a landmark demonstration that self-driving vehicles were technically feasible, using techniques combining probabilistic reasoning, sensor fusion, and machine learning that Thrun had developed in his prior Robotics research.
Google and self-driving cars
Following the Grand Challenge win, Thrun joined Google, where he helped found Google X, the company's experimental research lab, and led development of what became the Google self-driving car project starting around 2009. That effort eventually spun out as Waymo, one of the most advanced Self-driving car programs as of the mid-2020s. Thrun also contributed to Google Street View during his time at the company.
Udacity and online education
In 2011 Thrun co-taught a free online course on artificial intelligence from Stanford that enrolled more than 160,000 students worldwide, an experience widely credited with helping launch the modern massive open online course, or MOOC, movement. He left his Stanford professorship in 2012 to co-found Udacity, an online education platform focused on technology and, later, AI and self-driving car engineering curricula, aiming to make advanced technical education accessible outside traditional university settings.

Thrun is generally regarded as a pragmatic, engineering-focused figure within AI, in contrast to researchers whose public profile centers on long-term risk or philosophical questions about Artificial general intelligence. His work is frequently cited as a turning point that shifted autonomous vehicles from academic curiosity to a serious commercial engineering target, paving the way for later investment by traditional automakers and new entrants alike. Some critics have noted that the timeline for fully autonomous, unsupervised self-driving cars promised in the years following the Grand Challenge proved far more optimistic than what the industry, including Thrun's own Waymo spinoff, ultimately delivered.
