Sam Altman is an American entrepreneur and the chief executive of OpenAI, one of the co-founders of the organization when it launched as a nonprofit in December 2015. Before OpenAI, Altman co-founded the mobile app company Loopt and later served as president of startup accelerator Y Combinator from 2014 to 2019, a role in which he oversaw the funding and mentorship of thousands of early-stage companies before shifting focus to lead OpenAI full time.
Leading OpenAI
Under Altman, OpenAI evolved from a nonprofit research lab into the company behind GPT-3, GPT-4, and ChatGPT, whose November 2022 launch became one of the fastest consumer product adoptions in history and triggered a broad industry response often described as an AI "code red" at rival companies. Altman has overseen OpenAI's restructuring from a pure nonprofit toward a "capped-profit" and later further restructured corporate model, its deep, multi-billion-dollar partnership with Microsoft (AI) under Satya Nadella, and its expansion from research into a large commercial API and consumer products business.
The 2023 board crisis
In November 2023, OpenAI's nonprofit board voted to remove Altman as CEO, citing a loss of confidence in his candor with the board, without publicly detailing specific allegations. The decision, the OpenAI board crisis, triggered an internal revolt: nearly all of OpenAI's roughly 800 employees signed a letter threatening to resign, president Greg Brockman quit in protest, and Microsoft signaled it would hire Altman and Brockman to lead a new advanced AI research unit if the board did not reverse course. Within five days, Altman was reinstated as CEO and most of the prior board was replaced, an episode widely analyzed afterward as a case study in AI lab governance and the tension between nonprofit safety-oriented boards and fast-moving commercial operations. Chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, who had voted to remove Altman, later expressed regret and left OpenAI the following year.
Other ventures
Altman has also backed and led Worldcoin (later rebranded World), a project co-founded with Alex Blania that uses iris-scanning hardware to issue cryptographic proof-of-personhood credentials, framed partly as infrastructure for distinguishing humans from AI systems online as generative models make synthetic content and AI agents harder to detect. He has been a frequent public commentator on Artificial general intelligence timelines and AI governance, testifying before the U.S. Senate in 2023 on AI regulation.
