Ruslan Salakhutdinov (Russian: Руслан Салахутдинов; born c. 1980) is an Uzbek researcher of Tatar origin working in the field of artificial intelligence. He specializes in deep learning, probabilistic graphical models, and large-scale optimization. He is a professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University and served as director of AI research at Apple from 2016 to 2020.
Salakhutdinov's doctoral advisor was Geoffrey Hinton. Salakhutdinov was considering quitting the field of artificial intelligence when he met Hinton in 2004, but changed his mind after Hinton asked him to take part in a project focused on a new way to train artificial neural networks, which Hinton dubbed "deep belief networks." This research made a large impact on the field of deep learning. He received his PhD in 2009. He is well known for having developed Bayesian Program Learning.
Early life and education
Salakhutdinov was born around 1980. He pursued graduate studies in computer science, where he encountered Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer in neural networks. Under Hinton's supervision, Salakhutdinov worked on deep belief networks, a class of generative models that helped revive interest in neural network research. His doctoral work contributed to the foundations of modern deep learning, and he completed his PhD in 2009.
Career and research
Since 2009, Salakhutdinov has published at least 42 papers on machine learning. His research spans deep learning, probabilistic graphical models, and large-scale optimization. He is particularly known for Bayesian Program Learning, a framework that enables learning from few examples by combining probabilistic inference with program synthesis.
In 2016, Salakhutdinov joined Apple as its director of AI research, where he led efforts to advance the company's artificial intelligence capabilities. He left Apple in 2020 to return to Carnegie Mellon University, where he continues to teach and conduct research. In June 2023, he joined Felix Smart, a company that uses AI to care for plants and animals, as a board director.
Awards and recognition
Salakhutdinov is a CIFAR fellow, an honor recognizing leading researchers in artificial intelligence and related fields. His work on deep belief networks and Bayesian Program Learning has been widely cited and has influenced subsequent developments in generative AI and large language models.
