Dabbala Rajagopal "Raj" Reddy (born 13 June 1937) is an Indian-born American computer scientist and one of the early pioneers of Artificial intelligence. He served on the faculty of Stanford University and Carnegie Mellon University for over 50 years, and was the founding director of the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon. Reddy was instrumental in creating the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies in India and served as the founding chairman of the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad. He and Edward Feigenbaum won the 1994 ACM Turing Award, sometimes called the Nobel Prize of computer science, for their work in artificial intelligence. Reddy was the first person of Asian origin to receive the Turing Award.
Early life and education
Raj Reddy was born in a Telugu family in Katur village of Chittoor district in present-day Andhra Pradesh, India. His father, Sreenivasulu Reddy, was a landowner, and his mother, Pitchamma, was a homemaker. He was the first in his family to attend college. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the College of Engineering, Guindy (now part of Anna University, affiliated with the University of Madras), he went to Australia as an intern. While a student at the University of New South Wales, he began using an English Electric Deuce Mark II computer, a vacuum-tube machine with mercury delay-line memory and punch-card input/output. He earned an MTech degree from UNSW in 1960 and then joined IBM as an applied science representative. In 1963 he enrolled at Stanford University, where he completed his PhD in 1966 as the first doctoral graduate in artificial intelligence under John McCarthy. After three years on the Stanford faculty, he joined Carnegie Mellon University to work with AI pioneers Allen Newell and Herb Simon.
Career at Stanford and Carnegie Mellon
Reddy began his academic career as an assistant professor of computer science at Stanford from 1966 to 1969. He then moved to Carnegie Mellon as an associate professor in 1969, became a full professor in 1973, and was named a university professor in 1984. He served as the founding director of the Robotics Institute from 1979 to 1991 and as the dean of the School of Computer Science from 1991 to 1999. As dean, he helped create the Language Technologies Institute, the Human Computer Interaction Institute, the Center for Automated Learning and Discovery (later renamed the Machine Learning Department), and the Institute for Software Research. He also held the Moza Bint Nasser Chair at the School of Computer Science.
Beyond his university roles, Reddy was a co-chair of the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC) from 1999 to 2001. He was one of the founders of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence and served as its president from 1987 to 1989. He also served on the international board of governors of the Peres Center for Peace in Israel and on the governing councils of EMRI and HMRI, organizations that use technology-enabled solutions to provide cost-effective health care coverage to rural populations in India.
AI research contributions
Reddy's early research was conducted at the AI labs at Stanford, first as a graduate student and later as an assistant professor, and at Carnegie Mellon from 1969 onward. His research concentrated on the perceptual and motor aspects of intelligence, including speech, language, vision, and robotics. Over five decades, Reddy and his colleagues created several demonstrations of spoken language systems, such as voice control of a robot, large-vocabulary connected speech recognition, speaker-independent speech recognition, and unrestricted vocabulary dictation. They also made seminal contributions to task-oriented computer architectures, analysis of natural scenes, universal access to information, and autonomous robotic systems.
Hearsay I was one of the first systems capable of continuous speech recognition. Subsequent systems like Hearsay II, Dragon, Harpy, and Sphinx I/II developed many of the ideas underlying modern commercial speech recognition technology. Some of these ideas, most notably the "blackboard model" for coordinating multiple knowledge sources, have been adopted across the spectrum of applied artificial intelligence. Reddy also co-authored a historical review of speech recognition with Xuedong Huang and James K. Baker.
Technology in service of society
Reddy's other major research interest was exploring the role of technology in service of society. One early effort was the Centre mondial informatique et ressource humaine, founded by Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber in France in 1981, with a technical team that included Nicholas Negroponte, Alan Kay, Seymour Papert, Raj Reddy, and Terry Winograd. Reddy served as the centre's chief scientist. The centre aimed to develop human resources in third-world countries using information technology, and it attempted several seminal experiments in providing computerized classrooms and rural medical delivery. In 1984, French President François Mitterrand decorated Reddy with the Légion d'Honneur medal.
In the 1990s, Reddy, along with Robert Thibadeau, Jaime Carbonell, Michael Shamos, and Gloriana S. Clair, started the Universal Digital Library Project to scan books and other media such as music, videos, paintings, and newspapers, with the goal of providing online access to all creative works to anyone, anywhere, at any time. A larger Million Book Project was launched in 2001 as a collaborative effort with China (involving professors Pan Yunhe, Yuting Zhuang, and Gao Wen) and India (involving professor N. Balakrishnan).
Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies
Reddy was instrumental in creating the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) in Andhra Pradesh in 2008, together with Drs. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and K. C. Reddy. The university was based on the premise that current nationwide merit-based admissions, such as SAT tests, are flawed and do not provide a level playing field for gifted youth from rural areas. Rural students tend to be at a serious disadvantage in factors such as teacher quality, parental education, ability to pay for coaching, and time spent on learning. RGUKT was designed to cater to the educational needs of low-income, gifted, rural youth. Reddy served as the founding chancellor of RGUKT from 2008 to 2019.
Later initiatives and legacy
Reddy proposed that a fully connected population makes it possible to think of a KG-to-PG online college in every village, providing personalized instruction. He argued that if all students are provided digital literacy and learning-to-learn training as part of primary education before they drop out, anyone can learn any subject at any age, even without qualified teachers on the subject. He also explored how machine learning and AI can be used to empower individuals and communities.
Reddy's legacy spans multiple institutions. He was the founding chairman of the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, and served as chairman of its governing council. His work in speech recognition laid foundations for later developments in deep learning and neural networks that now power modern large language models. His contributions to robotics and AI education have influenced generations of researchers at Stanford AI Lab and MIT CSAIL and beyond.
Awards and honors
In addition to the 1994 ACM Turing Award, Reddy received numerous other honors. He was decorated with the Légion d'Honneur in 1984. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He also received the Okawa Prize and the Honda Prize for his contributions to AI and robotics. His work has been recognized globally, and he has served on advisory boards for various international research organizations.
Personal life and influence
Reddy's personal journey from a rural village in India to the pinnacle of computer science has been an inspiration. He has mentored many students who went on to become leaders in AI, including those who contributed to the development of speech recognition systems at companies like Google DeepMind and OpenAI. His emphasis on technology for social good continues to influence projects in education and health care in developing countries.
Reddy remains active as a professor emeritus at Carnegie Mellon, where he continues to advise on research and policy. His vision of universal access to information and education has become increasingly relevant in the age of the internet and generative AI.
