Norbert Wiener (1894-1964) was an American mathematician who founded the field of cybernetics, the study of control and communication in animals and machines, and was among the first prominent scientists to publicly warn about the social consequences of automation.
Mathematical career
A child prodigy who entered Tufts College at age eleven and received a Harvard PhD at eighteen, Wiener worked across mathematics, including stochastic processes and Fourier analysis, before turning to the study of feedback and control systems during and after the Second World War, when he worked on anti-aircraft fire-control systems that had to predict the future position of a maneuvering target.
Cybernetics
In his 1948 book "Cybernetics: Or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine," Wiener argued that feedback loops, mechanisms by which a system's output is measured and used to adjust its future behavior, provided a unifying framework for understanding control processes in engineering, biology, and society alike. The concept of feedback described in the book underlies self-regulating systems throughout modern engineering and had a formative influence on early thinking about self-correcting and adaptive machines, a lineage that runs through later work in Reinforcement learning, where an agent adjusts behavior based on reward signals.
Warnings about automation
Unlike many of his contemporaries, Wiener was deeply concerned about the societal effects of the technology he helped create. His 1950 book "The Human Use of Human Beings" extended cybernetic ideas to society and warned that automation driven by feedback-controlled machines could displace workers and concentrate power, arguments that anticipated later debates in AI ethics and AI governance about the labor and societal effects of increasingly capable automated systems. He was notably skeptical of using cybernetic machines for military decision-making, warning against delegating consequential judgment to systems that could not be held accountable, a concern echoed in modern discussions of AI safety and autonomous weapons.
Legacy
Although Wiener predates the formal founding of Artificial intelligence at the 1956 Dartmouth workshop and was not himself part of that community, which included the younger John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky, his framework of feedback and self-regulation is considered a direct intellectual precursor to the field, and cybernetics is often described as a sibling discipline to early AI. His early warnings about automation and accountability are frequently cited as some of the first instances of what would later be recognized as AI safety and AI ethics concerns, long before the technology existed to make them concrete.
