The Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) is a research institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), formed by the 2003 merger of the Laboratory for Computer Science (LCS) and the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (AI Lab). Housed within the Ray and Maria Stata Center, CSAIL is the largest on-campus laboratory as measured by research scope and membership. It is part of the Schwarzman College of Computing but is also overseen by the MIT Vice President of Research.
CSAIL's research activities are organized around semi-autonomous research groups, each headed by one or more professors or research scientists. These groups span seven general areas: artificial intelligence, computational biology, graphics and vision, language and learning, theory of computation, robotics, and systems (including computer architecture, databases, distributed systems, networks, operating systems, programming methodology, and software engineering).
Origins and Project MAC
Computing research at MIT began with Vannevar Bush's differential analyzer and Claude Shannon's electronic Boolean algebra in the 1930s, followed by the wartime MIT Radiation Laboratory, the post-war Project Whirlwind, and the Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE). On July 1, 1963, Project MAC was launched with a $2 million grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The name MAC stood for "Machine-Aided Cognition," "Multiple-Access Computer," and "Men and Computers," reflecting the vision of J. C. R. Licklider's 1960 paper "Man-Computer Symbiosis."
Project MAC's first director was Robert Fano, who deliberately called it a "project" rather than a "laboratory" to facilitate recruiting staff from other MIT departments. The DARPA program manager was Licklider, who later succeeded Fano as director. Project MAC became famous for groundbreaking work in operating systems, artificial intelligence, and the theory of computation. Its contemporaries included Project Genie at Berkeley, the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute.
An AI Group, including Marvin Minsky (director), John McCarthy (inventor of Lisp), and a community of programmers, was incorporated into Project MAC. They focused on vision, mechanical motion, manipulation, and language as keys to more intelligent machines. In the 1960s and 1970s, they developed the Incompatible Timesharing System (ITS) for PDP-6 and PDP-10 computers. Fernando J. Corbató brought the Compatible Time-Sharing System (CTSS) from the MIT Computation Center, using DARPA funding to purchase an IBM 7094. CTSS supported about 100 TTY terminals and roughly 30 simultaneous users. Project MAC also developed Multics, a successor to CTSS, which became the first high-availability computer system and a testing ground for security kernels, initially with General Electric and Bell Laboratories, and later with Honeywell.
AI Lab and Laboratory for Computer Science
In the late 1960s, Minsky's AI group sought more space but was unable to get satisfaction from project director Licklider. Minsky found that splitting off to form his own laboratory would entitle him to additional office space. Thus, the MIT AI Lab was formed in 1970, with many AI colleagues leaving Project MAC. Programmers such as Richard Stallman, who used TECO to develop EMACS, flourished there. The AI Lab invented Lisp machines, commercialized by Symbolics and Lisp Machines Inc. in the 1980s.
Project MAC was officially renamed the Laboratory for Computer Science (LCS) in 1976. LCS continued research in operating systems, programming languages, distributed systems, security kernels, and the theory of computation. Two professors, Hal Abelson and Gerald Jay Sussman, formed a smaller group between the two labs, officially called the MIT Project on Mathematics and Computation (a backronym for "Project MAC") and nicknamed "Switzerland" for its neutrality.
Formation of CSAIL
On July 1, 2003, the fortieth anniversary of Project MAC, LCS and the AI Lab merged to form CSAIL, creating the largest laboratory on the MIT campus with over 600 personnel. In 2018, CSAIL launched a five-year collaboration with iFlytek, a company sanctioned the following year for allegedly using its technology for surveillance and human rights abuses in Xinjiang. In October 2019, MIT announced it would review partnerships with sanctioned firms such as iFlytek and SenseTime. The agreement with iFlytek was terminated in April 2020. CSAIL moved from the School of Engineering to the newly formed Schwarzman College of Computing by February 2020.
Notable Research and Contributions
CSAIL and its predecessors have been central to the development of machine learning, neural networks, and deep learning. Researchers at the AI Lab and LCS contributed to foundational work in time-sharing systems, Lisp machines, and transformers - the architecture underlying modern large language models. The lab's ongoing work in generative AI and robotics continues to influence both academia and industry. CSAIL maintains strong ties with tech companies, including OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic, through collaborations and alumni networks.

CSAIL is housed in the Ray and Maria Stata Center, designed by Frank Gehry. The lab's research groups produce hundreds of publications annually, and its alumni hold leadership positions in academia and industry. CSAIL's interdisciplinary approach, combining theory with practical systems, has led to innovations in operating systems, programming languages, computer vision, and robotics. As of the early 2020s, CSAIL remains a leading institution in computer science research, with a focus on addressing challenges in AI safety, human-compatible AI, and scalable systems.
