Project MAC and the AI Lab

Project MAC was launched on July 1, 1963, with a $2 million grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The name MAC stood for multiple phrases, including "Machine-Aided Cognition" and "Multiple-Access Computer," reflecting the vision of a computer utility and human-computer symbiosis, a term coined by J. C. R. Licklider in his 1960 paper. Robert Fano, its first director, insisted on calling it a "project" to avoid political issues within MIT. The early community included Licklider, Fernando J. Corbató, and an AI group led by Marvin Minsky, with John McCarthy (inventor of Lisp). This group developed the Incompatible Timesharing System (ITS) on PDP-6 and PDP-10 computers and pioneered research in vision, robotics, and language.

In 1969, Minsky's group split to form the MIT AI Lab, seeking more space aren't they, but the split led to a new laboratory in 1970. LCS was formed in 1976 when Project MAC was renamed. The AI Lab later became known for innovations like EMACS (developed by Richard Stallman) and Lisp machines, commercialized by Symbolics and Lisp Machines Inc. in the 1980s.

Fusion into CSAIL

On July 1, 2003, LCS and the AI Lab merged to form CSAIL, creating a laboratory with over 600 personnel. The merger consolidated research across areas such as operating systems, artificial intelligence, and theory of computation. In 2018, CSAIL entered into a five-year collaboration with Iflytek, a company sanctioned in 2019 for alleged human rights abuses in Xinjiang. MIT announced a review of such partnerships in October 2019, and the agreement was terminated in April 2020. CSAIL moved to the Schwarzman College of Computing in February 2020, having previously been part of the School of Engineering.
