ICONIQ Capital, LLC (styled as ICONIQ) is an American investment management firm headquartered in San Francisco, California. It functions as a hybrid family office providing specialized financial advisory, private equity, venture capital, real estate, and philanthropic services to its clientele. The firm is known for its secretive approach and its deep ties to technology industry leaders, particularly those associated with Meta.
History
ICONIQ was founded in December 2011 in San Francisco by Divesh Makan, Michael Anders, and Chad Boeding. The trio previously worked as wealth advisors at Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley. During the early 2000s, Makan built relationships with key members of the social media startup Facebook, which later became the technology conglomerate Meta. One of his first clients was Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, who introduced Makan to Sheryl Sandberg and Dustin Moskovitz. Disagreements with senior leadership over business practices at both Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley led the team to leave in late 2011 and establish ICONIQ as independent wealth advisors with greater autonomy. The firm's launch coincided with Facebook's initial public offering in May 2012, which was overseen by Morgan Stanley.
In 2013, ICONIQ launched Iconiq Growth as its growth capital arm, encouraged by Dave Goldberg, and brought on Will Griffith, a general partner at TCV, to lead it. In 2018, Boeding spun out to form his own wealth advisory firm, Epiq Capital. In 2019, the firm launched Iconiq Impact, a separate philanthropic arm to distribute capital earned through the family office. In 2020, Blue Owl Capital acquired a 6% stake in ICONIQ.
Operations
ICONIQ operates as a hybrid family office for ultra-high-net-worth clients, with a client base primarily deriving wealth from technology, high finance, and entertainment industries. Its investment platform has evolved to include private equity, venture capital, growth equity, and real estate. The firm also serves institutional clients, such as the Canadian pension fund CPP Investment Board. The hybrid structure was designed to reduce conflicts of interest between its financial advisory businesses and investment platform. At the clients' discretion, pooled capital may be deployed to ICONIQ's private investment vehicles. The majority of the firm's assets under management come from wealth management.
Clientele
ICONIQ does not disclose its clientele and is known for being secretive within the investment management industry. Select clients affiliated with ICONIQ include figures from Meta, business, and entertainment sectors. The firm's early relationships with Zuckerberg, Sandberg, and Moskovitz established a strong connection to Meta's leadership, which has influenced its investment focus.
Portfolio
ICONIQ's investment portfolio spans various sectors, with a notable emphasis on Artificial intelligence. The firm has participated in funding rounds for AI companies, including Anthropic, a prominent developer of Large language model systems. Through its growth and venture arms, ICONIQ has backed firms working on Generative AI, Machine learning, and related technologies. The portfolio also includes investments in cloud infrastructure providers like Coreweave and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, which support AI workloads. ICONIQ's approach involves deploying capital across private vehicles, often co-investing with other institutional investors.
Impact and Reputation
ICONIQ has gained a reputation for discretion and influence within the investment management industry. Its hybrid model allows it to serve both individual and institutional clients while maintaining a low public profile. The firm's early association with Meta's founders provided a foundation for its growth, and its expansion into areas like Deep learning and Neural network startups reflects broader trends in technology investing. As of the early 2020s, ICONIQ continues to operate with a focus on long-term relationships and diversified asset management.
