Gordon Earle Moore was an American engineer, businessman, and philanthropist. He co-founded Intel Corporation in 1968 with Robert Noyce and served as its chairman and CEO. He began his career at the Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory, where he worked under William Shockley, before leaving with Noyce to found Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957. In 1968, Moore and Noyce founded Intel, which became the world's largest semiconductor chip manufacturer. Under Moore's leadership as CEO from 1975 to 1987, Intel introduced the first microprocessor, the 4004, in 1971, and later the x86 architecture that powered IBM-compatible personal computers. Moore's emphasis on innovation and manufacturing efficiency helped Intel dominate the microchip market for decades. He served as chairman until 1997, when he became chairman emeritus.
Philanthropy and Later Life
Moore and his wife Betty established the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation in 2000, which has donated billions to environmental conservation, science, and patient care.
