Eric Vishria (born 1979) is an American entrepreneur and venture capitalist. He is a general partner at Benchmark, a venture capital firm, where he leads investments in technology startups, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and enterprise software. Before his venture capital career, Vishria co-founded the social browser Rockmelt and served as a vice president at Yahoo after its acquisition.
Early Life and Education
Vishria graduated from Stanford University at age 19 with a Bachelor of Science in mathematical and computational science and a minor in human biology. His academic background provided a foundation for his later work in technology and investment, blending quantitative rigor with an understanding of human systems.
Career in Technology
Vishria began his professional career in investment banking at Broadview International, a boutique technology-focused firm. He gained early entrepreneurial experience as an employee at Loudcloud, a cloud computing company, and later at Opsware, a data center automation firm. When Hewlett-Packard acquired Opsware in 2007 for $1.65 billion, Vishria was serving as vice president of marketing. Following the acquisition, he became vice president of the products, software, and technology solutions group within HP Software.
In October 2008, Vishria left HP to co-found Rockmelt with Tim Howes, a former Netscape engineer. Rockmelt launched its social browser in November 2010, integrating social media feeds directly into the browsing experience. The company raised significant venture funding but struggled to gain widespread adoption. In 2013, Yahoo acquired Rockmelt for a reported $60 to 70 million, and Vishria joined Yahoo as a vice president, where he worked on product and technology initiatives.
Venture Capital at Benchmark
In 2014, Vishria joined Benchmark as a general partner, marking the firm's first new partner addition in over six years. Benchmark is known for its small, focused partnership and early investments in companies like eBay and Twitter. Vishria focused on enterprise software and infrastructure, leveraging his operational experience from Opsware and Rockmelt.
Vishria has led Benchmark's investments in several notable companies, holding board seats at Amplitude, an analytics platform that went public in 2021; Benchling, a life sciences R&D platform; Cerebras Systems, a maker of large-scale AI chips; Confluent, a data streaming company that also went public in 2021; Contentful, a content management platform; Fireworks.ai, an AI inference startup; and Quilter, a developer tools company. His exited investments include Pixie Labs, acquired by New Relic, and Bugsnag, acquired by SmartBear.
Focus on Artificial Intelligence
As an investor, Vishria has increasingly focused on AI and generative AI startups. His portfolio includes Fireworks.ai, which provides high-performance inference for large language models, and Cerebras Systems, which builds specialized hardware for AI training and inference. Vishria's approach emphasizes supporting technical founders and companies that address core infrastructure challenges in AI, such as compute efficiency and model deployment.
Vishria has spoken publicly about the transformative potential of AI, comparing the current era to the early days of cloud computing. He advocates for investing in companies that build foundational tools rather than narrow applications, a strategy that aligns with Benchmark's history of backing platform-level technologies.
Personal Life and Influence
Vishria is based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is recognized in the venture capital community for his technical depth and hands-on approach, often working closely with portfolio companies on product strategy and go-to-market execution. His career trajectory, from investment banking to startup founder to investor, gives him a multifaceted perspective on the technology industry.
Vishria's influence extends through his board roles and his participation in industry discussions on AI and enterprise software. He is considered a key figure in the venture capital ecosystem, particularly for early-stage AI investments.
