The Carnegie Building is a four-story academic structure on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. Named for industrialist Andrew Carnegie, who donated $125,000 toward its construction, the building was completed in 1906 and serves as the current home of the Cognitive Science Department. It is among the westernmost buildings on campus, offering scenic views over the city of Troy and the Hudson River.
The building's history is tied to a series of fires that reshaped RPI's campus. A fire in 1862 destroyed downtown Troy structures and prompted construction of the Main Building, which served as the institute's primary facility. A subsequent fire in 1904 destroyed that Main Building, leading RPI to consider expanding downhill within the downtown area or even merging with Columbia University and relocating to New York City. Ultimately, the institute decided to remain in Troy but move uphill, away from the downtown district.
Construction and dedication
In 1905, Andrew Carnegie donated $125,000 to replace the destroyed Main Building. As part of the uphill relocation plan, RPI acquired the 10-acre (40,000 m2) Walter Phelps Warren estate. The Carnegie Building was erected there using Harvard brick and Indiana limestone, with construction completed in September 1906 at a total cost of $133,000. The building was dedicated on June 12, 1907, alongside the Walker Laboratory.
The architects were Whitfield & King, with Henry D. Whitfield being Andrew Carnegie's brother-in-law. The design emphasized fireproof construction, incorporating concrete, steel floors, and partitions to divide rooms. Terrazzo floors and white tiling lined the walls.
Architectural layout
The first floor contained four large recitation rooms used by the departments of Geodesy and Drawings, while the second floor was occupied by the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics. The third floor featured a small drawing room and several classrooms. The topmost fourth floor housed the largest drawing room of its time, measuring sixty by one hundred feet, with a small side room for blue-printing.
Corridor walls and the underclass lobby displayed drawings and photographs of structures designed by RPI male students, while the upperclass lobby featured etchings of familiar classic figures. A contemporary description noted the building was "located at the head of the entrance of the Institute grounds; the interior is admirably arranged for the purposes intended, well lighted, heated and ventilated."
Cognitive science research
The Carnegie Building is home to the Cogworks laboratory, which directs research in cognitive science. The doctoral program in the Cognitive Science Department focuses on three driving ideas. First, "next generation" artificial intelligence aims to design artificial cognitive systems spanning the full range of cognition, from low-level perception and action to high-level reasoning. Second, "next generation" computational cognitive modeling seeks to implement cognitive architectures that go beyond current structures toward Allen Newell's original dream of a design accurately reflecting natural cognitive processes. Third, cognitive engineering exploits experimental data to improve interfaces between natural cognitive systems and task environments.
A program called Experimetrix, held on the second floor, allows students to sign up for experiments on brain function and cognitive science. Graduate students and professors collect and analyze data for further research, with student participants receiving extra credit when permitted by their professors. The closely related Rensselaer Artificial Intelligence and Reasoning (RAIR) Laboratory is located in the Russell Sage Laboratory, supporting related work in Artificial intelligence and Machine learning.
Current role
The building continues to serve as a hub for interdisciplinary research, integrating fields such as cognitive-science, Neural network modeling, and Generative AI. Its location on the western edge of campus provides a quiet setting for the Deep learning and Large language model research conducted by faculty and graduate students. The Carnegie Building remains a key part of RPI's commitment to advancing understanding of natural and artificial cognitive systems.
