Batya Friedman is an American professor at the University of Washington Information School, where she directs the Value Sensitive Design Research Lab. She is also an adjunct professor in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering and in the Department of Human-Centered Design and Engineering. Friedman is best known for pioneering value sensitive design (VSD), a theoretical and methodological approach that seeks to account for human values - such as privacy, justice, and autonomy - throughout the design process of information systems.
