Amazon Alexa, or simply Alexa, is a virtual assistant technology marketed by Amazon and implemented in software applications for smartphones, tablets, wireless smart speakers, and other electronic appliances, as well as at Alexa.com. It was first introduced on November 6, 2014, alongside the Amazon Echo smart speaker, developed by Amazon Lab126. Alexa performs tasks such as voice interaction, music playback, setting alarms, streaming podcasts, providing real-time information on weather, traffic, and sports, and controlling smart devices as part of a home automation system. Its capabilities can be extended by installing "skills," which are additional functions developed by third-party vendors, similar to apps. The system relies on automatic speech recognition, natural language processing, and other forms of weak Artificial intelligence.
Most Alexa-enabled devices activate via a wake-word, such as "Alexa" or "Amazon," while others, like the Amazon mobile app on iOS or Android and the Amazon Dash Wand, require a button press. As of November 2018, more than 10,000 Amazon employees worked on Alexa and related products, and by January 2019, Amazon had sold over 100 million Alexa-enabled devices.
History and Development
Alexa was largely developed from the British computer scientist William Tunstall-Pedoe's Evi system, a question-to-answer engine, and a Polish speech synthesizer named Ivona, which Amazon acquired in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The name "Alexa" was chosen because its hard consonant with the X helps with recognition precision, and it is reminiscent of the Library of Alexandria, a reference also used by Amazon's Alexa Internet service. In June 2015, Amazon announced the Alexa Fund, a US$200 million program to invest in companies creating voice control skills and technologies, with investments including Jargon, Ecobee, Orange Chef, Scout Alarm, Garageio, Toymail, MARA, and Mojio. The Alexa Prize was announced in 2016 to advance the technology further.
In January 2017, the first Alexa Conference took place in Nashville, Tennessee, an independent gathering of Alexa developers and enthusiasts, with follow-up conferences under the name Project Voice. At the Amazon Web Services Re: Invent conference in Las Vegas, Amazon announced Alexa for Business and paid add-ons for skills. In May 2018, Amazon said it would include Alexa in 35,000 new homes built by Lennar. In November 2018, Amazon opened its first Alexa-themed pop-up shop in Toronto's Eaton Centre, and Alexa was built into the Anki Vector home robot. By 2018, Alexa was available in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, and Hindi, with Canadian French featuring a Quebec accent.
In October 2019, Amazon expanded Alexa to Brazil in Portuguese, and in November 2019 introduced the Echo Studio, a Dolby Atmos-compatible speaker. However, hoped-for revenue from voice ordering of Amazon products or partner services like Domino's Pizza and Uber never materialized. Alexa did not play audio ads, and display ads were relatively unsuccessful, leading to a crisis meeting and hiring freeze in 2019. By 2022, with the division losing billions per quarter, Amazon began laying off Alexa employees. Echo Show devices started serving hidable ads for skills in December 2022, followed by shopping ads in November 2023.
Transition to Generative AI
In November 2023, Amazon directed Alexa employees to train a large language model codenamed "Olympus." In December 2024, Amazon announced its own set of AI models under the Nova brand. In February 2025, Amazon introduced Alexa+, a new version powered by generative AI, announced as free for all Prime members. On the same day, Anthropic announced that Claude models were part of Alexa+. In January 2026, Amazon expanded Alexa+ to the web with the launch of Alexa.com, allowing browser-based interaction, positioning it in direct competition with web-based AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini. Alexa+ was made available to everyone in the U.S. on February 4, 2026, nearly a year after launch.
In early 2026, Amazon entered advanced discussions to invest up to $50 billion in OpenAI as part of a potential AI partnership, so that OpenAI's models could be integrated into Alexa and other internal projects. After criticism that AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude have become easier to communicate with, Amazon announced that Alexa would be upgraded into a more chatty device, able to follow threads and be more proactive in its responses, planned for 2026.
Applications and Ecosystem
A companion application is available for selected devices in the Apple App Store, the Amazon Appstore, and Google Play. The apps allow users to install skills, control music, manage alarms, and create shopping lists. Users can also review recognized text on the app screen and send feedback to Amazon about recognition accuracy. Alexa's integration with Amazon Web Services and other platforms has expanded its use in homes and businesses, though specific revenue models have faced challenges.
