Alation is an enterprise software company based in Silicon Valley. The company develops a data catalog platform that helps organizations organize, consolidate, and govern their data. Alation's first product, launched in 2015, was a data catalog designed to give data consumers an easy way to search for enterprise data using natural language, a concept that has become central to modern data management.
The company was founded in 2012 by Satyen Sangani, Aaron Kalb, Feng Nui, and Venky Ganti. Sangani, who had a background in economics and had worked as an executive at Oracle, observed that data users in large companies struggled to find and trust data. He theorized that machine learning could be used to help them. Kalb, who had experience in symbolic systems and had worked on Siri at Apple, believed that crowdsourcing could address the challenge. The team combined these two ideas to create Alation, with its first solution being a data querying system powered by natural language processing. This tool helped define the modern data catalog, aiming to catalog an organization's data and make it more accessible to more people, a concept often termed data democratization.
History
Alation was founded in 2012 and launched its data catalog product in March 2015 after emerging from stealth mode. The company's initial solution eased the building of complex queries with collaboration features, enabled data catalog efforts, and integrated with various data and technology products such as Snowflake, Tableau, and Databricks.
By early 2021, Alation had more than 250 customers, including AbbVie, American Family Insurance, Autozone, Cisco, Exelon, Finnair, Munich Re, New Balance, Pfizer, Scandinavian Airlines, and U.S. Foods. By October 2021, the customer count had grown to around 300, adding GE Aviation, NASDAQ, and Regeneron.
In October 2021, Alation acquired Lyngo Analytics, a data insights company that develops software to help users find insights by asking questions in simple business terms. The acquisition aimed to deepen Alation's ability to convert natural language questions from non-technical users into SQL queries.
In January 2022, Alation launched the "Data Radicals" podcast, hosted by CEO and co-founder Satyen Sangani. The show features guests such as retired U.S. Army General Stan McChrystal, Tableau Chief Data Officer Wendy Turner-Williams, and author David Epstein, focusing on using data in powerful ways.
In September 2022, Alation announced that it had achieved $100 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR). On May 20, 2025, the company announced the acquisition of Numbers Station AI, a pioneer in building AI agents for data workflows. This acquisition was intended to accelerate the ability of data and engineering teams to build and deploy AI-native analytics applications featuring agentic workflows with enterprise-grade governance.
Funding
In early March 2015, Alation announced a $9 million Series A funding round led by Costanoa Ventures and Data Collective. Later that month, the company emerged from stealth mode to launch its data catalog product.
In June 2021, Alation raised a $110 million Series D round led by Riverwood Capital, with participation from Sanabil Investments and Snowflake Ventures, as well as existing investors Costanoa Ventures, Dell Technologies Capital, Salesforce Ventures, and Sapphire Ventures. This round valued the company at $1.2 billion, making it a unicorn.
In November 2022, Alation raised $123 million in a Series E financing led by Thoma Bravo, Sanabil Investments, and Costanoa Ventures, with participation from Databricks Ventures. Other investors included Dell Technologies Capital, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Icon Ventures, Queensland Investment Corporation, Riverwood Capital, Salesforce Ventures, Sapphire Ventures, and Union Grove. Alation has raised a total of $340 million and, as of its Series E funding, had a valuation of more than $1.7 billion.
Operations
Alation is headquartered in Redwood City, California. The company also has offices in London, U.K., and Chennai, India, with a presence in over 25 countries. As of November 2022, Alation had over 700 global employees, an increase of 75% in less than 12 months.
Technology and Impact
Alation's platform leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning to automate data cataloging, governance, and search. The use of natural language processing allows users to query data using everyday language, reducing the barrier to data access. The company's focus on data democratization has made it a key player in the enterprise data management space, helping organizations improve data literacy and governance.
Alation's integration with major data platforms like Snowflake, Tableau, and Databricks has positioned it as a central hub for data discovery and collaboration. The acquisition of Lyngo Analytics and Numbers Station AI reflects the company's commitment to advancing AI-driven data insights and agentic workflows, which are becoming increasingly important in the era of generative AI and large language models.
