Alan Curtis Kay (born May 17, 1940) is an American computer scientist whose work shaped modern computing through object-oriented programming and graphical user interface (GUI) design. At Xerox PARC in the 1970s, he led development of the first modern windowing GUI and the influential programming language Smalltalk, coining the term "object-oriented." His later work influenced laptop and tablet computing through the Dynabook concept.
Kay received the 2003 Turing Award for contributions to object-oriented programming and personal computing. He has been elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Royal Society of Arts.

In 2001, Kay founded Viewpoints Research Institute, a nonprofit focused on children and learning.
