The Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) was founded in 1962 as the Association for Machine Translation and Computational Linguistics (AMTCL), marking the beginning of what would become the primary annual meeting for researchers in natural language processing (NLP). The organization emerged during an era of early artificial intelligence research, when machine translation was a prominent focus. Its founding reflected growing interest in computational methods for analyzing and generating human language, a field that has since evolved into modern NLP and large language models.
The inaugural annual meeting took place in 1963, held in conjunction with the Association for Computing Machinery National Conference. In its early years, the gathering was informal, with presentations limited to abstracts and no formal proceedings. The society adopted its current name, the Association for Computational Linguistics, in 1968. The publication of the annual meeting's Proceedings of the ACL began in 1979, gradually maturing into a comprehensive record of research. Many early meetings were co-located with the Linguistic Society of America, and occasionally with the American Society for Information Science and the Cognitive Science Society.
Founding and Early Development
The initial membership of the AMTCL numbered about 100 researchers. In 1965, the organization took over the journal Mechanical Translation and Computational Linguistics, which had been launched in 1954. This publication was succeeded by the American Journal of Computational Linguistics (1974–1978, 1980–1983) and then Computational Linguistics (1984–present). Since 1988, MIT Press has published the journal for the ACL. The society's growth paralleled the expansion of computational linguistics as a discipline, with early work focusing on rule-based systems and syntactic analysis, predating the statistical and machine learning approaches that dominate today.
Annual Meeting Evolution
The annual meeting, now known as the ACL conference, has become one of the most influential venues for NLP research, alongside the Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing (EMNLP) conference. The meeting is held each summer, rotating locations: Europe in years divisible by three, North America in years one modulo three, and Asia–Australia in years two modulo three. This rotation reflects the global distribution of computational linguistics research. In 2020, the conference received more submissions from China than from the United States for the first time, highlighting the field's internationalization.
From 1989 to 1994, the United States government sponsored substantial research in the field, leading to increased author retention and growth in areas such as speech recognition. By the 21st century, the ACL community had stabilized around core research topics, with authors maintaining long-term engagement. In 1991, the group developed a prototype text generator called Parrot, based on Noam Chomsky's universal grammar theory. The system used a finite set of syntactic transformations and a hand-curated lexicon, but funding ceased after difficulties with inflection and abstract locutions.
