In 1991, the group developed a prototype text generator called Parrot, based on Noam Chomsky's universal grammar theory. The system employed a finite set of syntactic transformations and a hand-curated lexicon. Despite initial success, including experimentation with morpheme syntactics, funding ceased after researchers encountered intractable difficulties with inflection and abstract locutions.
Annual Meeting
The annual meeting of the ACL is held each summer, rotating locations according to a fixed pattern: Europe in years divisible by three, North America in years one modulo three, and Asia-Australia in years two modulo three.
