Aaron Winsor Levie (born December 27, 1984) is an American entrepreneur. He is the co-founder and CEO of the enterprise cloud company Box, known for its content management and collaboration platform. Under his leadership, Box became a publicly traded company and a significant player in the enterprise software market.
Levie was born in Boulder, Colorado, and moved to Mercer Island, Washington, at age ten. He attended Mercer Island High School, where he initially aspired to be a film director. After his film school application was rejected, he enrolled at the University of Southern California. During his time there, he interned at Miramax and Paramount Pictures. In 2005, during his junior year, he dropped out to focus on Box, a cloud storage startup he had conceived as a college business project.
Founding and Early Years of Box
The idea for Box originated in 2004 as a college business project examining cloud storage options for businesses. Levie identified a fragmented market and saw an opportunity to build an online file storage service. In December 2005, he took a leave of absence from USC to launch Box (originally box.net) with his friend Dylan Smith, who was attending Duke University. The company was incorporated in April 2005, operating initially from Smith's parents' house on Mercer Island before moving to Berkeley, California. Levie and Smith secured early angel investment from Texas billionaire Mark Cuban after a cold email.
Pivot to Enterprise and Growth
In 2007, as the consumer cloud storage market became crowded, Levie and Smith shifted Box's focus from consumer service to selling to businesses. This strategic pivot proved crucial. Box expanded into Europe in 2012 with its first office in London. By 2014, Box reported that 40 percent of Fortune 500 companies were paying customers. The company, headquartered in Redwood City, was backed by major venture capital firms including Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, General Atlantic, Meritech Capital Partners, New Enterprise Associates, U.S. Venture Partners, and Salesforce.com.
Public Offering and Leadership
Box filed for an initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange in March 2014. Citing market fluctuations, the company delayed the IPO until January 23, 2015. As CEO, Levie has guided Box through its evolution as a public company, focusing on cloud content management and integrating with major platforms. In recent years, he has emphasized the role of Artificial intelligence in enterprise software, positioning Box to leverage Generative AI and Large language model technologies to enhance its offerings.
Speaking and Contributions
Levie is a frequent speaker at industry events such as Fortune Brainstorm Tech, Dreamforce, and TechCrunch Disrupt. He has also written articles on technology innovation for publications including The Washington Post, CNN.com, Los Angeles Times, Fortune, Forbes, ZDNet, and Fast Company. His public commentary often addresses trends in cloud computing, enterprise software, and the impact of Machine learning and Deep learning on business.
Personal Life and Impact
Levie is known for his energetic and sometimes irreverent public persona, often using social media to comment on tech industry news. He has been a vocal proponent of the transformative potential of cloud-computing and more recently of Neural network and Transformer (architecture) models in reshaping how businesses operate. His leadership at Box has made him a notable figure in the Silicon Valley startup ecosystem, representing a generation of entrepreneurs who built companies during the early cloud era and navigated them through subsequent technological shifts.
