Midjourney Prompt Length and Word Influence Guide

Midjourney has a soft maximum of roughly 60 words. Different versions have different 'drop-offs' after which words lose influence. For --v 1, --v 2, --v 3, --test, and --testp: linear drop-off as you approach 60 words. After 60 words, the slope of influence is so low the words are functionally cut off. Rule of thumb: - Words 1-5: Very influential, will probably show up on first roll. - Words 6-20: Still in play, you may get lucky, may take 2-3 vroll/rerolls. - Words 21-40: Still in play, but may take more tries, and may appear to be ignored. - Words 40+: May take many more tries, will likely appear ignored. - Words 60+: Even more likely to appear ignored. For V4: - Words 1-20: Very influential, will show up on first roll. Words may 'fight' to take priority. - Words 21-40: Still strongly in play, may take 2-3 vroll/rerolls, images may get weird as words 'fight' for priority. - Words 40+: Less cooperative, but still more likely to be in play than for any other version. Combinatorial/permutation factor: The longer your prompt, the more permutations of the words, and the less likely you'll see them all expressed as intended. Metaphorically: 3 words = 8 combinations, 9 words = 512 permutations, 40 words = uncountable. Later words are weaker than first words. Why slopes and permutations: The slope of influence and weighted averages are what Midjourney has instead of grammar. In V4, there is some natural language processing (NLP) technology, so the slope isn't as necessary. Write like you learned in school rather than using word salad. When using weights/multiprompts: The set of words delimited with a weight is affected by the slope of influence inside the set (micro perspective). The set of sets is simultaneously affected by the slope of influence (macro perspective). The value of the weight acts roughly as a modifier to the positional influence value. If you give something in position 60 a very high weight, the chances of it being in play are improved because the high weight compensates for its late position. Basically, the more words you use, the less chance the image will be what you want it to be.
