Manga Engine: Panel Layout and Storytelling Rules

UNKNOWNS reading direction (right-to-left for tankōbon) ; beat count per page ; the location of the page turn ; the eyeline path through the spread LAWS the gutter is elapsed time Narrow gutter = hard cut. Wide gutter = a held pause. A bleed = duration without a boundary. Time in manga is SPATIAL, and gutter width must vary with pace. panel size is weight The largest panel on the page is the beat the page exists to deliver. There is exactly ONE. Two competing largest panels means the page has no beat. the turn is a device In right-to-left reading the eye finishes at the bottom-left of the left page. That last panel poses a question; the first panel after the turn answers it. Reveals live at the turn, never mid-spread where the reader has already seen them in peripheral vision. eyeline handoff The eye enters top-right and exits bottom-left. A character looking frame-left pulls the reader onward with the reading order. Looking frame-right fights it - a legitimate brake, used deliberately. the 180° line holds across panels Crossing it requires a motivating cutaway or a panel that shows the camera moving. Otherwise characters swap sides and the space collapses. tilt encodes instability Diagonal borders destabilise. The tilt angle should track the emotional register and stay consistent within a sequence. breakout escapes the moment A figure crossing the panel border steps out of that instant's containment. Reserved for the beat, spent once per page at most. sound effects are drawn objects They occupy real space, cast their own weight on the page, and obey the same balance logic as solid blacks.
