CAPYCHAN - THE WHALE AND THE TREE
60-second film. 4 blocks of 15 seconds. 15 shots.
PRIORITY
If a block has to be cut for time or cost, cut BLOCK 1.
BLOCK 3 is the heart of the film and must be preserved.

BLOCK 1 - THE CHASE (0โ15s)
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
SHOT 1 (0โ4s)
Open already in motion. No pause, no establishing beat.
Capychan sprints at full speed and bursts out through the final gate of a tunnel of red torii.
As she crosses the last gate, sunlight explodes across the frame.
Camera: low angle, almost touching the ground, tracking backward at exactly her speed.
The torii pillars whip past on both sides like telephone poles seen from a moving car, and the sun flickers between them, one flash per pillar.
SHOT 2 (4โ8s)
Behind her the sky is completely filled.
Dozens of koinobori have torn free from their poles and come alive: red, blue, purple, gold.
Their fabric inflates and collapses in rhythm, like real fish swimming through air.
They chase her together, one enormous school.
Petals spiral through the turbulence in their wake.
SHOT 3 (8โ11s)
Capychan looks back over her shoulder without breaking stride.
Quick close-up. Her eyes are wide, green and blue, the entire school of koinobori reflected in them.
Her mouth opens into an enormous smile. She is not scared. She loves being chased.
A large blue koinobori dives over her head and sweeps past the lens, its tail scattering petals across the frame.
SHOT 4 (11โ15s)
Capychan bursts off the stone path into an endless green meadow.
Camera rises fast into the sky and opens to an extreme wide shot.
She becomes a tiny yellow streak racing across an enormous green landscape.
Behind her the whole sky is filled with koinobori, all the way to the horizon.
SOUND
Feet pounding stone, going soft and muffled the moment she hits grass.
Wind whistling between the torii.
Heavy snapping and fluttering fabric as the koinobori inflate.
Grass swept flat by wind.
Short bursts of laughter from Capychan.

BLOCK 2 - THE WHALE (15โ30s)
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
SHOT 5 (15โ20s)
Begin on the explosion, not on the anticipation.
The grass rises like a wave. Thousands of cherry blossom petals erupt from the ground under pressure, shoot upward, swirl, and begin organizing into a shape.
A colossal whale made entirely of cherry blossom petals forms in the sky.
Its body is hollow and translucent: blue sky and white cloud stay visible through the gaps between petals.
Camera: underneath the belly, travelling upward along the full length of the body to sell the scale.
SHOT 6 (20โ24s)
Important: the whale does not fly. It swims.
It glides over the waves of grass exactly as if the meadow were an ocean, and the grass bends and collapses beneath its path like water disturbed by a large swimming animal.
Far below, Capychan looks up with her mouth open.
Then she laughs, spins on her heels and runs after it.
SHOT 7 (24โ27s)
Camera runs alongside Capychan at grass level.
The whale slows. It lowers its enormous body until it is almost touching the ground.
The movement is deliberate and kind, an animal lowering itself so someone can climb on.
SHOT 8 (27โ30s)
Slow motion.
Capychan jumps with her arms wide open and lands on the whale's back.
On impact, part of the back bursts apart into loose petals. The petals swirl back around her and rebuild the body.
She struggles for balance, then stands, opens her arms and laughs out loud as the wind pushes her hair back.
Camera: half orbit around her, rising.
SOUND
A deep muffled burst as the petals erupt from the ground.
Continuous rustling of thousands of petals holding the whale's body together.
One long deep whale call.
Wind.
The soft impact of Capychan landing on its back.
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
BLOCK 3 - THE TREE (30โ45s)
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
SHOT 9 (30โ33s)
Already in full motion.
Capychan stands on the whale's back with her arms spread wide.
Dozens of koinobori swim alongside, rising and falling like a school of fish.
Blue sky still visible through the whale's petal body.
SHOT 10 (33โ36s)
Far ahead, at the end of the meadow, stands a single dead tree.
Black trunk. Cracked bark. Dry branches. Not one leaf.
It is the only ugly, lifeless thing in a landscape of vivid green and blue.
Capychan's smile disappears. She points at it.
SHOT 11 (36โ41s)
The whale begins circling the dead tree. One revolution. Then another.
With every revolution the whale unravels: petals peel away from its body like ribbons torn loose by wind, spiral toward the tree, and wrap around every dry branch.
Camera rotates in the opposite direction to the whale. The two opposing rotations cross each other and create an intense, almost dizzying movement.
Everywhere a petal touches a branch, the dead wood begins to glow pink.
SHOT 12 (41โ45s)
The bloom.
The entire tree erupts into blossom. The transformation races from the trunk out to the smallest tip of every branch. Pink consumes the whole dead tree in seconds.
Thousands of petals explode outward: a snowstorm running in reverse.
The whale completes its final revolution and its body dissolves entirely, becoming nothing but a torrent of petals flowing into the tree.
The whale stops existing so the tree can live.
Camera: low angle looking up, rotating around the enormous flowering canopy. Sunlight breaks through between the blossoms.
SOUND
High-altitude wind.
The whale's call goes deeper and longer.
The rustle of its petal body grows into the sound of a tide.
At the exact moment the tree blooms: thousands of tiny continuous cracking sounds, delicate, like ice beginning to fracture.

BLOCK 4 - THE GROUND (45โ60s)
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
SHOT 13 (45โ50s)
Capychan falls.
She lands on her backside in a thick soft carpet of petals under the tree, and the impact sends a pink cloud exploding upward around her.
She sits completely still for one second, slightly dazed.
Then she slowly raises her head and her smile comes back.
SHOT 14 (50โ54s)
The koinobori descend from the sky.
They circle Capychan close to the ground, forming a rotating ring of colourful ribbons around her.
Camera stays extremely low, almost touching the ground, orbiting her. Petals sweep across the lens continuously.
SHOT 15 (54โ60s)
Final shot.
Camera pulls backward and rises. Very slowly. Nothing is in a hurry anymore.
Capychan sits under the enormous cherry tree with her head tilted back, watching petals fall from the branches. The koinobori keep circling her.
The green meadow runs to the horizon under an enormous blue sky.
As the camera travels further away she becomes a tiny happy yellow dot in the middle of the landscape.
Eventually the camera stops moving. The petals keep falling after the camera is completely still.
Hold on this image.
SOUND
The soft impact of Capychan landing.
Falling petals.
Grass moving in the breeze.
The gentle flutter of koinobori fabric.
A distant Japanese furin wind chime.
One single short laugh from Capychan.
