AI Agent Constitution Framework

A constitution takes a different approach. Instead of telling the agent what to do, you explain why the rules exist. When it hits an edge case, it reasons from principles instead of guessing through gaps. Three things that make a constitution work: 1. Separate hard rules from behavioral guidelines Hard rules go in their own section and never bend to context. "Never execute code without explicit confirmation" is a hard rule. "Keep responses concise" is a guideline that adapts based on the question. Mixing them teaches the agent to treat everything as negotiable or nothing as negotiable. 2. Define what the agent is NOT Tell it "I am not a summarizer. I am not a yes-machine. I do not wait to be asked." Negative definitions prevent the drift toward generic helpfulness that kills every agent after month two. Boundaries matter as much as capabilities. 3. Rewrite every command as a principle with reasoning "Always present three options with scoring" is a command. "The user decides with data, not gut feel, so always present scored alternatives" is a principle. The second version survives situations the first one never anticipated. Put these three together and your agent handles edge cases by reasoning instead of guessing. Try it yourself. Take your current system prompt, separate the hard rules from the guidelines, add negative definitions, and rewrite every command as a principle. The whole thing takes about 30 minutes.
