The kettle boiled. I poured the water into the mug, watched the tea bag swirl for a second, and then the sky outside the kitchen window turned a deep, bruised purple. Not a storm purple. More like someone had spilled ink on the whole atmosphere. I added milk. A low hum started, like a fridge that was working too hard. The spoon in my mug began to vibrate, tapping a slow rhythm against the ceramic. I fished it out and set it on the counter. The hum got louder. The window pane started to rattle in its frame, a loose, annoying sound. Then the light came. It wasn't a flash. It was a steady, growing glow from the center of the street, like a streetlight that had finally gotten its act together. It was bright enough to wash out the kitchen, making the white walls look a bit off-white. I squinted. My tea was probably getting cold. A shape formed in the middle of the glow. It was tall, maybe eight feet, and made of a material that looked like polished chrome but also like water, shifting and rippling without moving. It had no face, just a smooth, reflective surface that showed me a slightly distorted version of my own kitchen. I could see the biscuit tin on the counter behind me. I hadn't put the lid on properly. The shape extended an appendage. It wasn't a hand, more of a tapered limb, and from its tip, a beam of light shot out, hitting my garden gnome. The gnome, a chipped concrete figure holding a fishing rod, began to float. It hovered about a foot off the ground, rotated slowly, and then started to glow from the inside, a warm, orange light like a lava lamp. It was the most interesting thing that had happened all week. I took a sip of my tea. It was lukewarm. I'd left it too long. The tall shape made a sound, a series of low, resonant tones that felt more than heard, like a cello playing in my chest. It seemed to be waiting for a response. I looked at it, then at the floating gnome, then back at the shape. "You're blocking the light," I said. "I was trying to read the paper." The shape tilted its head, or the top part of its body where a head might be. The glow dimmed slightly. The gnome descended, landing back on the grass with a soft thud, its internal light fading. The shape then began to shrink, folding in on itself until it was the size of a beach ball, then a grapefruit, then a marble. It winked out with a small pop, like a lightbulb burning out. The purple sky reverted to a normal, overcast grey. The hum stopped. The only sound was the faint hiss of the radiator. I looked at my mug. The tea was definitely cold. I poured it down the sink, rinsed the mug, and put it on the draining board. The gnome was back in its spot, looking slightly chipped, which it had been before. I picked up the newspaper from the counter, sat down in my armchair, and opened it to the sports section. Nothing in the house seemed to have changed, except for a faint smell of ozone, like after a thunderstorm. I turned the page. The headline was about a local fete being cancelled due to rain. I sighed. That was more typical.
