# Tsinghua University

Tsinghua University is a public research university in Beijing, China, affiliated with the Ministry of Education. It is a leading institution in science and engineering, known for its AI research and influential alumni.

Tsinghua University (Chinese: 清华大学; pinyin: Qīnghuá Dàxué; THU) is a public research university in Haidian, Beijing, China. It is affiliated with and funded by the Ministry of Education of China. Tsinghua University's campus is in northwestern Beijing, on the site of the former imperial gardens of the Qing dynasty. ## History

### Early 20th century (1911–1949)
Tsinghua University was established in Beijing during a period of national upheaval and conflicts with foreign powers, culminating in the Boxer Rebellion. After the suppression of the revolt by a foreign alliance including the United States, the ruling Qing dynasty was required to pay indemnities. U.S. Secretary of State John Hay suggested that the US$30 million Boxer indemnity allotted to the United States was excessive. After negotiation with Qing ambassador Liang Cheng, President Theodore Roosevelt obtained Congressional approval in 1909 to reduce the indemnity by US$10.8 million, on the condition that the funds be used for scholarships for Chinese students to study in the United States.

Using this fund, Tsinghua College was established in Beijing on 29 April 1911 on the site of a former royal garden, serving as a preparatory school for students destined for American universities. Faculty for sciences were recruited by the YMCA from the United States, and graduates transferred directly to American schools as juniors. The motto, "Self-Discipline and Social Commitment," was derived from a 1914 speech by scholar Liang Qichao, quoting the I Ching.

In 1925, the school established a four-year undergraduate program and a research institute on Chinese studies. In 1928, it was renamed National Tsinghua University. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, in 1937, Tsinghua, Peking University, and Nankai University merged to form the National Changsha Temporary University, later the National Southwestern Associated University in Kunming. ### Later 20th century (post-1949)
After the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949, President Mei Yiqi and many professors fled to Taiwan with the Nationalist government, later establishing the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan, an independent institution. In 1952, the Chinese Communist Party reorganized higher education into a Soviet-style system, and Tsinghua became a polytechnic institute focused on engineering and natural sciences.

In 1953, Tsinghua established a political counselor program, the first university to do so, following a 1952 Ministry of Education directive. During the Third Front construction, Tsinghua set up a branch in Mianyang, Sichuan. In 1966, Tsinghua researchers were critical in China's transition from vacuum-tube to transistorized computers.

From 1966 to 1976, the Cultural Revolution disrupted the university, with students joining Red Guards and faculty persecuted. The university reopened in 1978. During the Criticize Lin, Criticize Confucius campaign (1973-1976), critique groups at Tsinghua and Peking University published under the pseudonym "Liang Xiao."

In the 1980s, Tsinghua adopted a multidisciplinary system, re-incorporating schools such as law, economics and management, sciences, life sciences, humanities, public policy, and arts and design. In 1996, the School of Economics and Management partnered with MIT's Sloan School, launching the Tsinghua-MIT Global MBA in 1997. In 1998, Tsinghua became the first Chinese university to offer an LLM in American law with Temple University.
