Licklider and Robert Taylor, in their influential paper "The Computer as a Communication Device," introduced the concept of an OLIVER (On-Line Interactive Vicarious Expediter and Responder), a hypothetical software agent that would act on behalf of a user. They named it in honor of Selfridge, acknowledging his visionary ideas about interactive computing.

## Government Advisory Work

For two decades, Selfridge served on the National Security Agency's (NSA) Advisory Board, where he chaired the Data Processing Panel. His expertise in pattern recognition and computing made him a valuable advisor on signals intelligence and data analysis. In 1980, journalist Duncan Campbell reported on NSA wiretapping activities at RAF Menwith Hill in England, describing it as a "billion dollar phone tap." In 2015, Campbell revealed that Selfridge had been his "best source" for that story, indicating Selfridge's willingness to share information about government surveillance programs.

## Later Life and Legacy

Selfridge retired in 1993 but remained active in intellectual pursuits. He authored four children's books: *Sticks*, *Fingers Come In Fives*, *All About Mud*, and *Trouble With Dragons*, showing a playful side that complemented his technical work. He was married and divorced twice and was survived by two daughters and two sons.

Selfridge died on 3 December 2008, leaving a legacy that continues to influence artificial intelligence. His Pandemonium architecture is studied as a precursor to modern neural networks and deep learning.
