# DFKI

## History

DFKI led the national Verbmobil project, which aimed to translate spontaneous speech robustly and bidirectionally for German/English and German/Japanese language pairs. ## Organization and Funding

Research and development projects are conducted across 29 research departments, thirteen competence centers, and eight living labs. Funding comes from government agencies including the European Union, the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWK), German federal states, and the German Research Foundation (DFG), as well as from industrial partners. Twice a year, a Scientific Advisory Board of internationally renowned experts audits the progress and results of state-funded projects.
