# DeepMind Acquired by Google

DeepMind, a British-American AI research laboratory founded in 2010, was acquired by Google in 2014 for reportedly $400-650 million, becoming Google DeepMind after merging with Google Brain in 2023.

DeepMind Technologies Limited, trading as Google DeepMind, is a British-American artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory and a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. Founded in the United Kingdom in 2010, it was acquired by Google in 2014. In April 2023, DeepMind merged with Google AI's Google Brain division to form Google DeepMind. The company is headquartered in London, with research centres in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, and Switzerland.

## Acquisition by Google

The founders aimed to create general-purpose AI, initially teaching it to play Atari video games like Breakout, Pong, and Space Invaders. The AI learned from raw pixels without programmed knowledge, eventually achieving expert-level performance.

DeepMind received investment from Horizons Ventures and Founders Fund, as well as entrepreneurs Scott Banister, Peter Thiel, and Elon Musk. Jaan Tallinn was an early investor and adviser. The company considered offers from Facebook, Musk, and others before Google confirmed its acquisition on 26 January 2014. The price was reportedly between $400 million and $650 million. After the acquisition, the company was renamed Google DeepMind for about two years.

## Ethics and Society

After the acquisition, Google and DeepMind established an artificial intelligence ethics board, but never revealed its members. In 2017, DeepMind launched the DeepMind Ethics and Society unit, with philosopher Nick Bostrom as advisor, to focus on ethical and societal questions related to AI. The company later opened a research team to investigate AI ethics.

In September 2015, DeepMind and the Royal Free NHS Trust signed an initial information sharing agreement to co-develop a clinical task management app, Streams, as part of a pilot program with the NHS to modernize its information systems, which often still used paper and fax machines.

In December 2019, co-founder Suleyman left DeepMind to join Google in a policy role. In April 2023, DeepMind merged with Google Brain to form Google DeepMind, partly in response to OpenAI's release of ChatGPT. This ended a years-long effort by DeepMind executives to gain greater autonomy from Google. In summer 2026, DeepMind moved into Google's Platform 37 building in King's Cross Central.

## Key Technologies and Research

DeepMind's initial algorithms used general-purpose methods such as reinforcement learning, with deep Q-learning and a convolutional neural network. The same AI could play different games without altering the code, achieving human-level or superhuman performance in some cases. In 2014, DeepMind introduced neural Turing machines, which allow neural-networks to access external memory like a conventional Turing machine.

The company has produced landmark results: AlphaGo in 2015 beat European Go champion Fan Hui, the first time AI defeated a professional player. In 2016, AlphaGo beat Lee Sedol, a match featured in the documentary AlphaGo. AlphaTensor discovered new matrix multiplication algorithms. AlphaFold achieved state-of-the-art on protein folding benchmarks. In July 2022, DeepMind released over 200 million predicted protein structures in the AlphaFold database.

In games, DeepMind continued with MuZero, which mastered Go, chess, and shogi, and AlphaStar for StarCraft. Agent57 reached human-level performance on all 57 Atari 2600 games by 2020. DeepNash, announced in July 2022, could play Stratego at expert level. DeepMind also developed algorithms like AlphaEvolve, AlphaDev, and AlphaTensor for discovering new algorithms.

## Large Language Models and Generative AI

Google DeepMind is responsible for two large language model families: the proprietary Gemini and the open-weight Gemma. It also developed generative models for other domains, such as Imagen (text-to-image), Veo (text-to-video), and Lyria (text-to-music).
